Book Selection
Policy
The White Cloud Community Library aims to provide
material that will meet the day-to-day educational, informational,
cultural and recreational interests and needs of the community.
To fulfill this purpose, the library endeavors to purchase those books
which are of permanent and current value, and represent the best
available to meet the community interest and needs. The selection is
to provide best sellers, light fiction and popular non-fiction books.
The purchases systematically build up a well-rounded adult collection
and juvenile collection. This collection should present the best
possible to enrich the public's literary and artistic tastes, to
satisfy their informational needs and provide recreational reading at
all levels of growth.
Obsolescence, damage and normal wear and tear make the discarding of
books a continuing process. A careful study of each book will be made,
especially non-fiction titles, taking into consideration several
factors: number of copies remaining in the library, provisions of
adequate coverage in the field, other similar material in the
collection (especially more recent and authoritative material), and
the need for the particular title or subject.
Books offered as gifts must meet the standards adopted for book
selections, unless they are by Michigan authors or are of particular
local or historical interest. The librarian reserves the right to
discard any undesirable materials.
Paperbacks are bought occasionally, either to explore a possible
awaking interest or to fill a gap for which a regular book may seem
too expensive.
