Geek: verb

1.  To Love, to enjoy, to celebrate, to have an intense passion for.

2.  To express interest in.

3.  To possess a large amount of knowledge in.

4.  To promote

The public libraries in Newaygo County are all looking forward to participating in Geek the Library, a community-based public awareness campaign.  The campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them, in an effort to heighten awareness about the critical funding issues public libraries face.

Geek the Library introduces “geek” as a verb and encourages the public to talk about what they “geek” – whether it’s engineering, superheroes or art.  The Geek the Library campaign illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something – everyone “geeks” something – and that the library supports them all.

Monday, October 22nd kicks off the campaign celebration, as each Library in Newaygo County will have a special event planned on a specific night of that week. Patrons will be encouraged to show their support by stopping in their local library for refreshments or by having an “I geek…” picture taken that will be added to their local library’s display. (Please check your library’s website for specific dates and times).

“"The Geek campaign is a great way for patrons to share their interests and for libraries to better know the interests of their patrons." Says Hesperia Community Library Director, Kay Brennan.

As the economic downturn slowly recovers, millions of Americans are turning to local libraries for educational opportunities, job-searching resources and entertainment.  The increased demand for library services is taking a toll on libraries already experiencing flat or decreasing budgets.  And state and local cuts are impacting public library hours, programs and staffing, forcing some libraries to close indefinitely.

While most people have visited their public library and understand that it plays an important role in their community, many do not know that libraries are at risk.  This public awareness campaign hopes to start a conversation about library funding.

We hope you will help the Newaygo County Libraries celebrate this campaign kick off! For more information about “Geek the Library”, please visit their website at: www.geekthelibrary.org.
